In the previous chapters of our inbound marketing certification course we emphasized on the importance of reviewing keywords and your on-page SEO.  In this post we would understand how that can be done? How can we expand our keyword list over a period of time? The answers to these questions can be found below

What is Keyword Expansion & Why is It Important?

Keyword Expansion means to find opportunities in your content about new keywords that can be used and optimized upon to make content more relevant and optimized and to bring in more customers.  It is done after we have already used some keywords for certain time and done SEO analysis about it. Then we know whether our keyword research worked or not. In either case, we might need new keywords to improve our inbound marketing strategy. Here is a list of things to do find new keywords for your content.

Methods to Expand Keyword

  1. Use of competitor sites can hand you with invaluable information about new keywords. If it is your competitor then you would like to be found for same keywords. Here are a couple of methods to do that
    • Using Google Keyword Planner: As we have discussed previously as a part of our inbound marketing certification course, that, keyword research using keyword planner can be done through 3 methods. One of them is entering URL. You can enter website of your competitor and see what keywords it ranks for.
    • Explore a competitor’s site: By exploring competitor site and using an SEO tool we can easily identify its keyword density and what it wants to rank for. Thus, we are able to get new keywords.
  2. Using Google search results to check where your website ranks help in checking which keywords you rank better at and which are the ones you need to rank upon. This way you can better upon your keyword research and keyword expansion
  3. Using Synonym search prospecting. Another method for a better SEO analysis is to find out synonyms for keyword expansion. By use of tilde sign~ we can get synonym related keywords. It can be pretty effective for your inbound marketing strategy.
  4. Keyword Tools– We have already discussed in this post how important keywords tools can be and how can these help in making your website getting better traffic. The websites that I use the most are
  1. Using Wikipedia- This is something new that I learnt from a friend of mine. It’s simple Wikipedia has tons of information. It is very much possible it might have something related to your content. You can use Wikipedia to check out the links, find competitor sites, sites that might be linking to it and find which keywords are these sites using. You can then use SEO analysis for keyword research and keyword expansion.
  2. Using your Analytics- You need to search for every minute details using your SEO analysis and try to get a view of what your buyer persona might actually search for. If there are certain keyword groups you might already have, you can use them to search more of them and better your inbound marketing strategy.
